#149 Hero Initiative:

A $1.49 Monthly Contribution Makes a World of Change for Disabled Orphans

Kid Learning from Home

What does it mean for you to be a #149 Hero?

It means you can give a girl the power to fight back.

To fight back against being institutionalized.

To fight back against those who want to exploit girls as young as 5.

To fight back against the poverty that forces a family to give their daughter with disabilities to an institution.

So a girl like Antonia can become a Girl Champion herself.

You can help give girls like Antonia their power back by donating just $1.49 monthly.

Empathy, always

Living in an impoverished village in rural northeastern Romania and not allowed to attend school regularly, Antonia is years behind her peers in language skills and academic knowledge. She has learning disabilities which make school even tougher as there are no special education teachers here. Malnourished, Antonia is small for her age and teased at school where she told us one girl has made it a game to try to knock her down every day. Children in foster care here, especially those with disabilities, are often marginalized and frequently do not receive the support they need to be successful in school. Without this, it's next to impossible for them to become independent adults capable of supporting themselves. The school drop out rate is very. Overall, 15.6 percent of all young adults have completed the 8th grade or less, according to Save the Children Romania!

Making a Difference: Small, consistent donations can have a significant impact over time. Even $1.49 a month can be used to buy necessary supplies, contribute to medical treatments, or provide educational resources. The power of collective effort means that if many people participate, the cumulative amount can truly change lives.

Education is the great equalizer.

Raising Awareness

4.5 years ago, none of these children with special needs were in school. According to Save the Children, Romania lacks Special Education and faces an alarming level of educational poverty. We came along to help. TODAY, 75% of OUR school-age kids at Delia's Learning Center attend school. Now we need your help keeping this miracle going. It’s hard to believe disabled children are still placed in institutions. Children who are orphans and children with families in poverty, having little education, who are unable to care for them. We work hard to prevent this from happening.

The Delia Foundation serves primarily orphaned children with special needs in foster care in rural Barlad, Romania. Our Delia’s Learning Center is located in one of the poorest regions of the EU and Romania. Our mission is to support the inclusion of children with disabilities in education and society. With a holistic approach, we provide tools to help our kids become successful in school and ultimately more independent. We offer early childhood education, educational tutoring, life skills, speech therapy, autism intervention, nutritional support, and a new teen program. Without an education or life skills, our kids are at risk of ending up on the streets or being institutionalized when they are older.

The journey to change the world starts with one child

Our inspiration is a little girl named Delia, who was born without properly formed limbs. Delia was given up at birth by her parents and is growing up in an institution. We are in awe of her determination. The phrase "I can't" is not in Delia's vocabulary.
